KITWE City Council over the weekend enthusiastically joined other councils in Kabwe for the Zambia Local Authority Sports Association (ZALASA) tournament, hosted by Kabwe Municipal Council, aimed at facilitating selection of employees for the regional games next month to be hosted by Steve Tshwete municipality in South Africa. ZALASA is affiliated to the regional sports body Southern Africa Inter- Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) which promotes cooperation through sport among employees and civic leaders of local authorities.

The tournament was graced by Kabwe Deputy Mayor Councilor Dominic Sichamba who represented the Minister of Local Government Hon. Vincent Mwale. The minister praised ZALASA executive committee for bringing municipalities together under the umbrella of sport. He noted that sport played a key role in ensuring that employees remained healthy and ready to discharge their functions.

The participants drawn from 13 local authorities took part in netball, marathon, football and pool table. The other disciplines were volleyball, table tennis and chess.

Kitwe City Council scooped third position (overall) after Kabwe Municipal Council followed by Lusaka City Council in the second position.

This year’s SAIMSA games will be held from 23 to 30 September and ZALASA has already received invitation to participated.
